What is a Cold Plunge - Ice Bath?

A cold plunge is the act of intentionally immersing your body in cold water for a period of time to stimulate a physiological response. It’s really been getting quite popular the past few years thanks to Wim Hof, Joe  Rogan, Andrew Huberman and many others who have led others and participated in this cold plunge journey. Cold plunge therapy is particularly helpful for athletes looking for performance gains, muscle recovery, increased energy, discipline, and mental fortitude.  If you're new to the scene, or looking for your first cold plunge , here are some of the many benefits.

Health Benefits Of A Cold Plunge

Muscle Recovery -  One of the key benefits of cold plunges is muscle recovery. After an intense workout, training, or competition a cold plunge can help reduce inflammation and flush out lactic acid which reduces soreness and improves muscle recovery.

Improved Circulation - Cold plunges have been shown to stimulate and improve blood circulation in the body. When you cold plunge the blood vessels constrict near the surface of the skin and shunt blood to your organs. It trains the tiny little muscles in the cardiovascular system to work alongside the heart.

Increased Metabolism - Studies have shown that regular cold exposure increases metabolism and brown fat.

Immune System Boost - Increased immune system response and higher levels of white blood cells is one of the many benefits.

Increased Energy Levels - The cold water shocks the body's nervous system into an upregulating fight or flight response. In the short term there are increased levels of adrenaline and Norepinephrine among many. This translates into increased energy levels, increased  performance, mental clarity, and focus.

Hormesis - Basically your body's ability to adapt to a stressor response and become stronger because of it.

Mental Strength Fortitude - No one really wants to get in the freezing cold water, for most people it takes a fair amount of mental strength and discipline to get into the cold water regularly.

Lower Stress Improved Sleep - Regular cold plunges help the body deal with stress and improve sleep. Who doesn’t want that?

Increased Testosterone - Regular cold plunging will increase your testosterone levels

 A note from the author-

People in my circle joke about me being the Wim Hof disciple as I’m always looking for ways to have a positive impact. My aim is to increase the health, vitality, a competitive edge, and vibrancy in the world.

I was a competitive athlete and cold plunging has changed my life and body for the better. As a retired soccer player, motocross racer, and Sabre fencing coach I acquired a lot of injuries along the way. I have a long list of broken bones and reconstructive surgeries with a broken back being one of the more substantial injuries. I can’t tell you how much cold plunges have helped my lower back by seriously reducing the chronic inflammation. If you want to read more check out my blog section.
